For a true Chapel Hill tradition, check out Top of the Hill Restaurant and Brewery. Their menu is a variety of eclectic southern-inspired dishes with locally-sourced ingredients, and they brew their own beer and distill their own vodka, whiskey, and gin. If you’re looking for shopping in downtown Chapel Hill, look no further than Rumors Boutique and Light Years Jewelry. At Rumors, you can browse hand-selected vintage pieces, or you can bring your own to sell. After you’re found the perfect outfit, you can head to Light Years for the finishing touches. Housed in Chapel Hill is the North Carolina Botanical Garden. Equipped with an education center, local art exhibit, and a gift shop, this conservatory is the perfect place to head on a pretty summer day. Also managed by the NC Botanical Garden is Coker Arboretum, which resides in the middle of UNC’s campus. Chapel Hill is also home to the Brumley Forest Nature Preserve, part of the Triangle Land Conservancy. Serving as a model for sustainable land management, this preserve gets members of the community out and moving on the various trails. There are many parks to explore around Chapel Hill. Many, including Cedar Falls Park and Southern Community Park, hold amenities like ball fields, trails, picnic shelters, basketball and tennis courts, and more. The town of Chapel Hill also offers various summer day camps for kids of all ages, and many of the camps are held in parks like Cedar Falls.
In downtown Chapel Hill, the Ackland Art Museum is a great place to see a variety of artwork. With pieces from artists in both North Carolina and across the country, the museum has multiple permanent and about 12 featured exhibitions every year.
The resident professional theater company at UNC, Players Repertory Company, puts on shows all year. With a new play almost every month, this company is sure to entertain with their wide range of shows. During the summer months, they also hold week-long classes for middle school kids to explore theater.
If you’re a college basketball fan, then you’ll be captivated by the Carolina Basketball Museum. This museum is first university basketball-only museum in the country and it showcases the history and achievements of the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill’s basketball team. Any Tarheels fan is sure to love this place.
The Morehead Planetarium and Science Center in downtown Chapel Hill is great for anyone who’s interested in exploring the Earth and the great Unknown. Even astronauts, 11 of the 12 who have been on the moon, have visited the planetarium. Sit where they sat as you watch live shows that explore that night’s stars, or embark on animated adventures that will have you trekking through space to uncover secrets of black holes or dark matter. No matter your interest, your inner scientist and explorer will surface while at the Morehead Planetarium.
